Kōparepare Rosé nabs another crown at Marlborough Wine Show

Whitehaven’s Kōparepare Marlborough Pinot Noir Rosé 2024 has joined its 2022 predecessor in being named Champion Rosé at the Marlborough Wine Show, sponsored by QuayConnect.

The trophy, sponsored by Scenic Hotel, joins a long collection of many the company has received at the Show over the years.

Senior Winemaker Diana Katardzhieva said a collective effort in the vineyard and winery brought the latest standout vintage to fruition. She shared a little more about the wine below…

Congratulations on picking up the trophy for the Champion Rosé of 2024! Can you tell us a bit about this wine and what made the 2024 vintage stand out?

The wine is produced from three company-owned or managed vineyards, with a regional composition of 50% from the Omaka Valley and 50% from Rapaura. 2024 will long be remembered for abundant sunshine and dry conditions promoting pristine fruit condition and pure, vibrant flavours. This result acknowledges that the vineyard teams, and particularly the winemaking team, did a fantastic job of carrying those flavours through to the finished product.

How did it feel to pick up this trophy, and why is the Marlborough Wine Show important to your team?

We’re excited to have won the champion rosé trophy, repeating the result from 2022 and continuing a lineage of gold laden results for this wine at the Marlborough Wine Show. The Marlborough Wine Show is important to Whitehaven as it allows us the opportunity to demonstrate our support for the Marlborough wine community and industry. This year, we also used it as a social, team-building occasion for our winery and cellar team as they attended the wine show lunch together, enjoying the company of the Marlborough wine community.

Can you tell us a bit about the Kōparepare range, and the characteristics you aim to showcase with it?

The Kōparepare range is about creating approachable, quality wines that are widely available.  Wines are made in the classic varietal style so that they can be shared and enjoyed with friends, time and time again. This is important because, for every bottle of Koparepare sold, we donate to the LegaSea cause supporting LegaSea’s work protecting New Zealand’s marine environment.  We wanted to create wines that people enjoy, are proud to share, and purchase knowing that they are making an important contribution to the conservation of New Zealand’s marine environment.

What food would you recommend pairing the 2024 Rosé with this summer?

Because we love the relationship we have with LegaSea for our Kōparepare range, we always recommend matching the wines with sustainably caught seafood.
